Forward Deployed Engineer Salary at Startups (2026): What Startups Pay vs. What Candidates Ask

October 9, 2026

US startups from seed to Series B post a median forward deployed engineer (FDE) base range of $175K–$225K. The middle of that range is $200K, and that is exactly what FDE candidates ask for: a median of $200K across 82 candidates who booked a call with us. If your band tops out at $200K, candidates start the conversation at your ceiling.

This report combines 75 FDE job postings with pay at 114 seed to Series B startups (October 2026) with what 82 forward deployed engineers told us they want when they booked a call with Recruiting from Scratch.

What FDE candidates ask for

Across 82 forward deployed engineers who booked a call with us in the last six months, the median target was $200K, and the middle half asked for $175K–$225K. Six in ten candidates we speak with are already actively interviewing somewhere else.

How the rest of the offer is structured

Across 141 FDE job descriptions at the same startups:

  • Equity is listed in 55%, but fewer than 1 in 25 state a percentage.
  • A bonus is listed in 27%. Commission is listed in 6%: on the job description, FDEs are paid like engineers, not salespeople.
  • Where they work: 52% onsite, 23% hybrid, 20% remote, and 38% mention travel.
  • Experience: the median posting asks for 4 years.
  • The work itself: 74% mention LLMs, agents or generative AI. The FDE has become the engineer who deploys AI inside a customer's business.

If you're hiring a forward deployed engineer

  • Price to the middle, not the floor. Candidates anchor around $200K. Ranges that top out below it lose people at the offer.
  • Make equity concrete. Almost no posting states a percentage, so a clear number stands out.
  • Show the range. 43% of FDE postings hide pay.
  • Plan for New York's higher floor. New York's typical range starts at $180K, against $160K in San Francisco, where ranges are wider at the top.
  • Move in days, not weeks. Most candidates are already in other processes.

How Recruiting from Scratch helps

Forward deployed engineering is our most-placed engineering specialty. We recently hired three forward deployed engineers for Cinder from a single search, and we placed six engineers at Mercor in one month. We work on contingency and send a shortlist of 3–5 vetted candidates.
