Staff Engineer Compensation: San Francisco vs New York (2026)

2026-08-12T23:41:29.804Z
Staff Engineer base pay is now effectively identical in San Francisco and New York — $250,000 versus $248,050, a gap of 0.8%. The difference is at the top: San Francisco's 90th percentile is $361,250 against New York's $300,000, a 20% spread.

If you are benchmarking a Staff offer off a New York band and hiring in San Francisco, the median will look fine and you will still lose your strongest candidates.

What the market pays

Median$250,000$248,050
90th percentile$361,250$300,000

The medians converged. The ceilings did not.

Two things happened at once over the past few years. Remote-era banding pushed companies toward
national pay scales, which lifted New York toward Bay Area levels at the middle of the range. And
New York's own AI and fintech density gave it genuine competition for senior ICs, so the middle rose
on its own merits rather than by policy.

What did not travel is the top of the market. Frontier labs and infrastructure companies remain
concentrated in the Bay Area, and they are the employers writing $350,000+ base offers for Staff
engineers. That is a small number of companies bidding hard, which moves a 90th percentile without
moving a median.

The practical consequence: **the two markets look the same until you are competing for someone
who has options.**

What this means for your offer

Hiring at the median. $248,000–$250,000 works in either city. A New York-benchmarked band is genuinely competitive here, and you should not pay an SF premium you do not need to. Hiring competitively. Around $270,000–$285,000 puts you above the 75th percentile in both markets. This is where most funded startups should be if they want a real choice of candidate. Hiring at the top. In San Francisco this means $350,000 and up, and it means competing with companies whose comp philosophy is not constrained the way yours probably is. In New York the same tier starts closer to $300,000. If you are in the Bay Area and your band tops out at $300,000, you are not in that conversation — and it is better to know that before you start the search.

Staff versus Engineering Manager

Worth knowing if you are deciding which role to open: in San Francisco, Engineering Managers
out-earn Staff ICs at the median ($262,500 versus $250,000). In New York the relationship is
roughly level ($240,000 versus $248,050). The IC-versus-manager premium is not a constant — it
depends on the market you are hiring in.

Frequently asked questions

Is Staff Engineer pay really the same in San Francisco and New York? At the median, yes — $250,000 versus $248,050, a difference of 0.8%. At the 90th percentile it is not: $361,250 in San Francisco against $300,000 in New York. What should I budget for a top-decile Staff hire? $350,000+ base in San Francisco, $300,000+ in New York — base only, before equity. Why is this lower than the numbers I see elsewhere? Those are usually total compensation. Every figure here is base salary, because base is what you are setting when you build a band. How many Staff Engineer roles are actually open? 332 in San Francisco and 199 in New York with a disclosed base, as of 12 August 2026.

Methodology

Figures come from active US job postings with a disclosed annual base salary between $80,000 and
$700,000, denominated in USD, deduplicated across job boards, measured on 12 August 2026.

Base salary only — equity, bonus and on-target earnings are excluded, which is why these numbers
read lower than the total-compensation figures you will see on aggregator sites. When you are
setting a band, base is the part you are actually negotiating.
