A $300K base is staff-level pay at the top of the startup market. 23% of staff engineer ranges at Series A to Series E startups reach $300K, and 4% reach $400K. At late-stage and public tech companies it is 39% and 10%. Senior engineer ranges rarely get there (7% at startups), and forward deployed engineer ranges sit in between (24%). Very few ranges start at $300K: 2–4% for staff roles. A $300K–$400K offer is the top of a range, paid for an engineer with the exact experience a company is short of.
This report is built from open US software engineering postings with pay (last 90 days, October 2026) at Series A to Series E startups and at late-stage and public tech companies, plus the roles Recruiting from Scratch recruits for.

Postings: open US roles first seen in the last 90 days with staff, senior or forward deployed software engineering titles. Titles must name software work, so hardware and other non-software engineering roles are excluded. Startup figures cover companies whose last round was Series A to Series F (seed to Series B for forward deployed engineers), with a known total raised that fits the stage. Late-stage and public figures cover companies that have raised more than $3B, raised Series F or later, or are public, and are reported separately. Duplicate multi-city posts count once, at most two postings per company are included, and ranges stated as total compensation are excluded. Shares count how often the top (or bottom) of a posted base range reaches each level. Segments with fewer than 20 paid postings are not shown. Amounts are rounded to $5K. "Roles we recruit for" covers roles opened with Recruiting from Scratch clients in the last 12 months, reported in aggregate only.
