Director of Product

Hire a Director of Product through RFS. We place product directors who lead PM teams and own product areas at VC-backed startups. 29-day average time to hire.

What is a Director of Product?

A Director of Product manages a team of product managers and owns a significant product area or the entire product function at a growing startup. They sit between individual PM contributors and the Head/VP of Product — translating company strategy into team-level priorities, developing PMs' skills, and ensuring consistent product quality and execution across their domain.

At what stage should you hire a Director of Product?

Series B through Series D, when the PM team has grown to 3–6+ PMs and needs a management layer below the VP/Head of Product. Often hired when a specific product surface (platform, consumer, enterprise) needs dedicated product leadership, or when the Head of Product's span of control is too wide to give each PM sufficient direction and mentorship.

What does a Director of Product do at a startup?

  • Lead, manage, and develop a team of 3–6 product managers
  • Own the roadmap and strategy for a significant product area or platform
  • Translate company OKRs into team-level product priorities and sprint plans
  • Partner with engineering directors and design leads on execution and quality
  • Drive cross-functional alignment on major product decisions
  • Contribute to product strategy at the company level alongside the VP of Product
  • Represent the product function in leadership team discussions and board updates

Key skills and qualifications

  • 6–10 years of product management experience, with 2+ years managing PMs
  • Track record of shipping high-quality products in a fast-moving environment
  • Strong people management: has developed junior and mid-level PMs into strong performers
  • Data-driven: uses metrics to drive product decisions and team accountability
  • Technical literacy — comfortable in engineering design discussions
  • Strong executive communication: presents to leadership and board on product matters

Why hire your Director of Product through RFS?

  • Product director searches are among the hardest to get right — deep PM skills plus management ability. We screen for both
  • 29-day average time to hire — director product searches benefit from a strong network
  • Pre-vetted for management track record and product quality standard
  • 300+ placements at VC-backed companies across product and engineering
  • No upfront fees
