VP of Product

Hire a VP of Product through RFS. We place VP-level product executives at VC-backed startups to lead product strategy and own the roadmap. 29-day average time to hire.

What is a VP of Product?

A VP of Product is the executive responsible for the company's product strategy, roadmap, and the team that builds it. They translate business goals into product vision, manage a team of product managers, and partner with engineering and design leadership to ship the right things. At a growth-stage startup, the VP of Product is often the most senior product voice in the company — a key partner to the CEO and a board-level stakeholder for product strategy.

VP of Product vs. Head of Product — what's the difference?

Functionally similar; the VP title typically comes with a larger team, broader executive scope, and more board-level visibility. Most startups use "Head of Product" for the first senior product hire and "VP of Product" once the product org is established (5+ PMs, own P&L input). The day-to-day responsibilities overlap significantly — what differs is the organizational maturity and the level of executive expectations around strategy and board communication.

At what stage should you hire a VP of Product?

Series B through Series D, when the product organization has grown to 4–10+ PMs and needs executive leadership with board-level visibility, or when product is a key factor in fundraising and investor conversations and you need a senior product voice who can speak confidently to those stakeholders.
